The Orchid Mantis (Hymenopus Coronatus)

These beautiful mantises are found across Malayasia, Indonesia and the Sumatran rain forests, where the conditions are humid and flora like orchids, papaya trees and flowering frangipani trees are present in the environment. These are ideal plants for the orchid mantis to live on as they have adapted their appearance to camouflage into the flowers of these plants. Their legs have adapted to look like petals, while their delicately coloured bodies blend into the flower shapes you can see the mantis imitating.

Camouflage is important for the mantises survival, as it means they can hunt their prey without being noticed. Their prey includes small insects such as fruit flies and moths, but are also known to successfully capture relatively larger animals such as small lizards. They also need the camouflage to protect themselves from their predators, which include lizards, geckos, birds, toads, jumping spiders and rodents.
